Formaldehyde Officially listed as a Carcinogen

PRLog (Press Release) – Jun 20, 2011 – Earlier this month the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, working through the National Toxicology Program, released the 12th Report on Carcinogens. The Report on Carcinogens (RoC) is a congressionally mandated, science-based, public health document that is prepared for the HHS Secretary by the National Toxicology Program. The report identifies agents, substances, mixtures, and exposure circumstances that are known or reasonably anticipated to cause cancer in humans. In it, formaldehyde was added to the list of chemicals known to cause cancer.  Formaldehyde is widely used in industry and is also found many consumer products and common building materials.  Formaldehyde is also a by-product of combustion and other processes.  Its volatility makes it a significant issue regarding human health.

The World Health Organization's (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) had already classified formaldehyde as a known human carcinogen.  The health effects associated with elevated levels of formaldehyde exposure have brought to light the dangers from prolonged and repeated contact with the chemical.

"The major exposure risks associated with form trash bins aldehyde come from people inhaling contaminated air," reported Ed C Kenmore Bisque 15 inchi hambers, President of EC2, a leading Midwest environmental and indoor air quality (IAQ) consulting firm.  "Exposure to elevated levels of formaldehyde can trigger asthma attacks, nausea, watery eyes, headaches and difficulty breathing as well as other health effects.  People can also be exposed to f manual trash compactor ormaldehyde from many sources in their homes.  These include off-gassing from pressed wood products, adhesives and many other common materials found all around our homes," he continued.

EC2 recently helped sponsor a video on formaldehyde dangers in the home.  It can be viewed at:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yD4pTC8GVpE
